🗺️ Best Hammock Camping Spots in the UK (Including a Few Hidden Gems We Probably Shouldn’t Tell You About)

Hammock Camping in the UK Is Way Better Than People Think

Most people imagine the UK as a soggy field, a cow, and a bloke shouting “GET OFF MY LAND.”
But tucked between all the hedgerows, forests, lakes and hills, the UK has some genuinely unreal hammock camping spots.
We grew up wild camping since we were kids — Yorkshire woods, Scottish mountains, the lot — so the list below is based on places we’ve tested, loved, and sometimes got lost in.

1. The Lake District

The Lakes is hammock heaven. Ancient woodlands, sheltered river valleys, quiet tarns for your morning dip, and endless trees spaced perfectly apart.
Top areas: Borrowdale, Buttermere woodlands, Grizedale Forest, Ennerdale, the quieter sides of Great Langdale.
Some of our best hangs ever have been here, listening to rain hit the tarp while staying warm and smug.

2. Scotland

This is the holy grail. Thanks to Scotland’s Outdoor Access Code, you can wild camp pretty much anywhere sensible as long as you’re respectful.
Best spots: Glenfinnan, Cairngorms lower forests, Loch Lomond’s east-side woodlands, Loch Morlich, Glen Coe woodland pockets, The Trossachs.
Nothing beats waking up under Scots pines with mist rolling over a loch. Feels spiritual.

3. Yorkshire Dales

Home turf for us, and underrated for hammocks. The wooded valleys and riverside pockets are peaceful and perfect for low-key nights.
Try Wensleydale woods, near Aysgarth Falls (discreetly), Wharfedale river edges, Nidderdale woodland, and the lower wooded areas around Malham.
Pick a sheltered nook and you’ll have one of the calmest nights sleep in England.

4. Snowdonia / Eryri

A mix of rugged peaks and lush valleys, with forest pockets that feel made for hammock setups.
Top spots include Betws-y-Coed woodlands, Coed-y-Brenin Forest, Gwydir Forest Park, and the lower parts of Ogwen Valley.
Tents get battered by wind here, but a hammock tucked into trees stays cosy.

5. The Peak District

The moors are bare, but the edges hide brilliant hammock-friendly woods.
Look around Padley Gorge, Ladybower’s tree line, Upper Derwent Valley, and the lower forests near Edale.
Midweek especially feels properly wild.

6. Cornwall’s Coastal Forests

Not just surf beaches — Cornwall has dreamy coastal woodland.
Cardinham Woods, Idless Woods, Tehidy Woods, and hidden pockets along the South West Coast Path offer stunning sea-view hangs.
There’s nothing like sleeping in a hammock, cooking dinner, then watching the sky melt into the sea.

7. The New Forest

Ancient trees, wild ponies, peaceful trails. Not everywhere allows wild camping, but some areas do, and others are fine if you stay discreet and respectful.
Perfect for beginners wanting a chill first hang.

Secret Spots We Probably Shouldn’t Share (But Will)

We won’t drop GPS coordinates, but if you wander enough, you’ll find them:

• A hidden beech woodland overlooking Ullswater
• A pine pocket near Loch Tulla with misty, cinematic mornings
• A quiet wooded valley behind Malham Tarn that feels like your own private world

Leave these places absolutely pristine.

How to Stay Low-Key and Respectful

Arrive late, leave early.
Keep noise low.
Use wide straps.
No fires unless allowed.
Leave absolutely no trace.
Avoid being visible from paths or farms.
Do that, and wild camping stays possible for everyone.

Why Hammocks Work So Well in the UK

The UK’s weather, terrain, and woodland density make hammocks ideal.
You stay off wet ground, avoid rocky or sloped terrain, sleep warmer than expected, and find endless tree spacing across the country.
This is the main reason we built Two Trees — the UK is secretly one of the best hammock-camping countries on earth.

Final Word

From Scotland’s wild glens to Cornwall’s coastal forests, the UK is stacked with hammock-friendly spots.
Once you start sleeping between trees instead of on the ground, everything feels different: birdsong hits better, mornings feel cleaner, and the gentle sway knocks you out like a baby.

Wherever you go, respect the land, pack light, and enjoy the freedom a hammock gives you.
