But tucked between the hedgerows, forests, lakes and hills, the UK has some genuinely unreal hammock camping spots. We grew up wild camping since we were kids — Yorkshire woods, Scottish mountains, the lot — so every spot below is based on places we've tested, loved, and sometimes got lost in.
1. The Lake District
The Lakes is hammock heaven. Ancient woodlands, sheltered river valleys, quiet tarns for your morning dip, and endless trees spaced perfectly apart.
Best areas: Borrowdale, Buttermere woodlands, Grizedale Forest, Ennerdale, the quieter sides of Great Langdale.
Some of our best hangs ever have been here, listening to rain hit the tarp while staying warm and smug.
2. Scotland
The holy grail. Thanks to Scotland's Outdoor Access Code, you can wild camp pretty much anywhere sensible as long as you're respectful.
Best spots: Glenfinnan, Cairngorms lower forests, Loch Lomond's east-side woodlands, Loch Morlich, Glen Coe woodland pockets, The Trossachs.
Nothing beats waking up under Scots pines with mist rolling over a loch. Feels spiritual.
3. Yorkshire Dales
Home turf for us, and criminally underrated for hammocks. The wooded valleys and riverside pockets are peaceful and perfect for low-key nights.
Try: Wensleydale woods, near Aysgarth Falls (discreetly), Wharfedale river edges, Nidderdale woodland, and the lower wooded areas around Malham.
Pick a sheltered nook and you'll have one of the calmest night's sleep in England.
4. Snowdonia / Eryri
A mix of rugged peaks and lush valleys, with forest pockets that feel made for hammock setups.
Top spots: Betws-y-Coed woodlands, Coed-y-Brenin Forest, Gwydir Forest Park, and the lower parts of Ogwen Valley.
Tents get battered by wind here. A hammock tucked into trees stays cosy.
5. The Peak District
The moors are bare, but the edges hide brilliant hammock-friendly woods.
Look around: Padley Gorge, Ladybower's tree line, Upper Derwent Valley, and the lower forests near Edale.
Midweek especially feels properly wild.
6. Cornwall's Coastal Forests
Not just surf beaches — Cornwall has dreamy coastal woodland.
Cardinham Woods, Idless Woods, Tehidy Woods, and hidden pockets along the South West Coast Path offer stunning sea-view hangs.
There's nothing like sleeping in a hammock, cooking dinner, then watching the sky melt into the sea.
7. The New Forest
Ancient trees, wild ponies, peaceful trails. Not everywhere allows wild camping, but some areas do — and others are fine if you stay discreet and respectful. Perfect for beginners wanting a chill first hang.
