Top 10 Wild Camping Spots in the UK Where the Trees Steal the Show
Top 10 Wild Camping Spots in the UK Where the Trees Steal the Show
We don't just camp anywhere. We camp where two (or two hundred) ridiculous trees turn a pitch from "nice" into "I'm never leaving." Here's our 2025 best trees in Britain list — every single one tested, hung in, and woken up in.
1. Glen Coe – The Three Sisters Viewpoint Pines
Two ancient Scots pines standing alone on the perfect grassy knoll opposite the Three Sisters. Hang the hammock between them and you're literally framed by the most dramatic mountain view in Scotland. Midges brutal. Memories eternal.
2. Dartmoor – Wistman's Wood
Legal high-camp 400m above the stunted, moss-draped dwarf oaks of Wistman's. Sleep among rowans on the ridge and wake up looking down on what feels like a Tolkien forest. One of the most atmospheric spots in England, full stop.
3. Lake District – Borrowdale Yew Trees
The ancient Borrowdale yews near Seathwaite — some over 1,500 years old. Camp 10 minutes uphill on the grassy terraces and your tarp ridgeline will be tied to trees that were seedlings when Vikings were still raiding. Let that sink in.
4. Isle of Arran – Glen Rosa Rowan Grove
A hidden flat meadow surrounded by rowans turning blood-red in autumn. The two fattest rowans are exactly hammock distance apart. Bonus: wild goats will photobomb your breakfast whether you like it or not.
5. Snowdonia – Gwydir Forest Beech Cathedral
Old Victorian beech plantings with trunks like cathedral pillars. Find the clearing at Llyn Sarnau — perfect two-tree hang and the smoothest bark you'll ever hug. Peaceful doesn't cover it.
6. Trossachs – Loch Katrine Oakwoods
The SSSI oakwoods on the south shore. Camp on the little peninsula where two massive sessile oaks guard the loch edge. Sunrise through the branches is stupidly beautiful — the kind that makes you late for wherever you're supposed to be going.
7. New Forest – Rhinefield Ornamental Drive
Stealth camp among the 1860s giant redwoods and Douglas firs. Arrive late, leave early, and you'll be strung between two 50-metre coastal redwoods wondering why you ever paid for accommodation. We're saying nothing official. You didn't hear it from us.
8. Cairngorms – Rothiemurchus Caledonian Pine Forest
The real ancient granny pines around Loch an Eilein. Camp on the quiet north shore — the two biggest pines on the loch edge are spaced like they were planted specifically for hammocks. Ancient, silent, and completely magic.
9. Brecon Beacons – Coed y Brenin Ancient Oak Plateau
Above the waterfalls, a secret shelf of 400-year-old sessile oaks wind-sculpted into the most ridiculous shapes. Every branch is a potential ridgeline. Every angle is a photograph.
10. Peak District – Padley Gorge Birch & Rowan
The upper gorge is wall-to-wall silver birch and rowan turning gold and crimson in October. Pick any two trunks, hang, and feel like you're sleeping inside a firework. Our personal autumn favourite.
Pro tip: Autumn — late September to early October — is when these spots go from great to outright obscene with colour. Plan accordingly.
